Introduction

About one million people were displaced by the civil war.  Much of the skilled workforce was non-Tajik and many fled, leaving the country in desperate need of training, as well as broader reconstruction of society and its institutions.

The poorest of the former Soviet republics even when the Soviet Union was intact, many Tajik men move to Russia in the hope of earning money to send home to their families.  While there, they are frequently subject to racist harassment.  It is not uncommon for them to take second wives.

 
Recent political history

A former Soviet republic, Tajikistan plunged into civil war almost as soon as it became independent from the Soviet Union in 1991. A rugged, mountainous country, with lush valleys to the south and north, it now faces the challenge of strengthening peace and reviving its ruined economy.
