The North Caucasus consists of the region between the Black and Caspian seas and includes the autonomous republics of Dagestan (2.6 million), Chechnya (1.1m), Kabardino-Balkaria (0.8m), North Ossetia (0.7m), Ingushetia (0.5m), Adygea (0.5m), and Karachay-Cherkessia (0.5m).  The region has long resisted Russian domination and was destabilised by the Chechen wars of the 1990s.
