In brief:

It is said that the country's second largest city, Osh, was founded by Adam after he was expelled from the garden of Eden.  In fact, the Kyrgyz were a nomadic people until being forced to settle in villages by the Russians.  A similar discrepancy can be seen between the pervasive belief that allegiance to any religion other than Islam would be a betrayal of Kyrgyz identity and the fact that Islam did not reach the country until the seventeenth century.

 
Recent political history

A country of striking beauty and towering peaks, Kyrgyzstan became independent with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
