Turkey is at a crossroads, it is a land stretching between two continents.
3% lies in Europe and 97% in Asia with the two sections being separated by the Bosporus in the north and the Dardanelles to the south and the Sea of Marmara which joins them. Culture, religion and economics have lost the certainty that they once commanded in times gone by. Worldwide there are nearly 70 million Turks, of which almost 63 million live in Turkey. Many Turks have made their homes overseas. Originally guest workers in the 1960s and 1970s, second and third generation Turks are to be found in many EU nations. An estimated 4.5 million of the population of western European countries are Turkish.
